Wastewater treatment plants use a range of physical, chemical and biological treatment process to reduce the quantity of chemical and microbiological pollutants in the wastewater. Treating wastewater ensures that the treated effluent can be discharged to the environment without causing a significant impact or reused for non-potable purposes.
The Emirate’s three major wastewater licensees operate over 35 wastewater treatment plants in the Emirate. These treatment plants are typically based on the activated sludge process and treat flows ranging from 100m³/d to 300,000m³/d.
The map below illustrates the location of the nine largest treatment plants that receive over 95% of the wastewater generated in the Emirate.
