Electrical engineer registration

On 1 January 2009, the Regulation and Supervision Bureau (RSB) published Revision 1 of The Electricity Wiring Regulations 2007 for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The purpose of these Regulations is to establish standards and principles that promote the design, construction and operation of safe and efficient systems of wiring in buildings and other premises.

The Distribution Companies, ADDC and AADC, currently undertake assessments and licensing of electrical contracting companies, covering electrical installation work in buildings/premises (Resolution No. 11 2002).

The Bureau has introduced an additional requirement for a qualified electrical engineer to be nominated as representative and signature authority for their company. Such engineers will be required to attend the “Electricity Wiring Regulations Course E1” (5 days) and pass an examination.

This requirement took effect on 1 November 2009 and company licences will not be renewed after this date without a registered engineer.

Engineers with expiring certificates will be required to attend the “Electricity Wiring Regulations Course E1” (5 days) as a refresher after the three years and to pass the examination again. Electrical contracting companies’ licences will not be issued or renewed without a registered engineer holding a valid certificate.

The list of Registered Engineers will be maintained on the Bureau’s website and is available to the public. Please click here to consult it.
