Wastewater disposal is the safe and sustainable environmental discharge or reuse of the products of wastewater treatment. The sector calls any treated effluent that is reused Recycled Water and any sewage sludge that is treated and reused Biosolids.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has a long history of using Recycled Water for irrigation of public open space and was one of the first countries to implement World Health Organization initial guidelines on wastewater reuse in 1975. The use of Recycled Water plays an important part in meeting the Emirate’s growing need for non-potable water to support irrigation, cooling and industrial demands.
Biosolids contain valuable nutrients and organic matter and have the potential to be used as a fertiliser, soil conditioner or fuel. The Emirate is reviewing options for exploiting this valuable resource.
ADSSC carry out most of the disposal of recycled water and biosolids in the Emirate and operates over 150km of recycled water transmission networks that transfer recycled water to end-users or environmental disposal sites. ADSSC currently also transfer all treated biosolids to landfill sites by road transport.
The disposal of recycled water and biosolids by licensees is regulated in the Emirate through the Recycled Water and Biosolids Regulations 2010.
